ASSESSMENT

In May 2005, Ukraine joined 40 European countries united by principles of Bologna process. Nowadays Bologna process is a process of creating a common educational space for European countries. Its main objective is the building of a European educational space on the basis of convergence of educational systems for recognition of diplomas obtained in different European countries by using common notions for all the definitions and measurement mechanisms, as well as a comparison of the learning outcomes of students from different countries and transparency of educational institutions activity.

So, education in Ukraine meets all European standards. Our higher educational establishments are doing a lot of work to make Ukrainian education capable of meeting the requirements of the Bologna Charter which presupposes acquisition of new qualities and maintenance of the best traditions and practices intrinsic to the national higher educational establishments.

Therefore, today the training of specialists at higher educational institutions in Ukraine is provided in correspondence with the two cycles system. The first cycle is completed after 4-years of studies and ends with awarding a Bachelor’s degree. The second one can be completed after one year of study and leads to the Master’s degree. Along with the Master’s, Specialist’s degree is kept as well.

Within the Bologna process, it is offered to introduce a tool of evaluation of the students’ workload and learning outcomes in credits in all national systems of education. It is based on ECTS — European Credit Transfer System — which allows conversion of credits (marks), obtained at different educational establishments. Being accumulative, it operates in accordance with the concept of lifelong learning.

The ECTS scale is a grading system designed to facilitate the transfer of academic results (expressed in terms of grades) between different national assessment systems. It is adopted by universities in the countries belonging to the European Higher Education Area, allowing the conversion of the grades from one country into grades used in another country, following common European rules.
